You're in for Tuesday, Oct 27 at 6 PM PT

PreviewWhere to join, the time in your zone, and where to grab your cheat sheet.

Hi {FIRST NAME},

You're registered for The Work-Optional Nurse Masterclass. Yay!

It's live on Tuesday, October 27 at 6:00 PM PT (9:00 PM ET) and runs about 75 minutes. Join here: [WEBINAR LINK]

Put it in your calendar now, especially if you might be on shift that week, so you can swap or plan around it: [CALENDAR LINK]

I also made you something. It's called The Paycheck Order Cheat Sheet. It's one page showing exactly where each dollar of your paycheck should go first, from the employer match to the HSA, Roth and 457(b).

I'm not sending it by email. It's waiting for you in the private group for nurses who registered, along with the reminders on the night: [GROUP LINK]

On the 27th I'm going to show you three things:

  1. Find your Coast FI number. The one number that tells you when you can stop grinding.
  2. Put your paycheck on autopilot. The order every dollar should go in, set once and left alone.
  3. Make bedside optional. How to drop a shift a week once you hit your number.

See you Tuesday night.

- Ellaine

P.S. In a few minutes I'll send you the short version of what Coast FI actually means. It's simpler than it sounds.

The number that lets nurses stop grinding

PreviewYou don't need to save for 30 more years. You need one number.

Hi {FIRST NAME},

Most nurses I talk to have the same plan, even if they've never said it out loud. Work bedside until 60, put a little into the 403(b), and hope it's enough.

Here's what nobody told us. You don't have to save hard for 30 more years. You need to reach one number.

It's called your Coast FI number. It's the amount you need invested today so that, without adding another dollar, it grows into everything you need by retirement.

Once you hit it, you stop saving for retirement. From that day, you only need to earn enough to cover today's bills. Everything you were putting away can go toward buying back your time instead.

Fewer shifts, a lower-stress job, per diem or part time, whatever you choose.

I reached mine in my 30s, as a nurse practitioner, after a pretty messy start with money. On Tuesday I'll show you how to work out yours, with your real age and your real spending, in about ten minutes.

- Ellaine

P.S. Next, I'll show you why that number is usually a lot smaller than nurses expect.

Why $1 at 35 is worth about $5 at 60

PreviewThe math that makes Coast FI possible on a nurse salary.

Hi {FIRST NAME},

Quick bit of nurse math for you.

One dollar invested at 35 and simply left alone, at a 7% average yearly return, is worth about $5.40 by 60. You didn't add anything. Time did the work.

That's why your Coast FI number is smaller than you think. If you spend about $60,000 a year, your full FI number is roughly $1.5 million. That's the scary number everyone talks about.

But at 35, you don't need $1.5 million. You need about $276,000 invested, and time grows it the rest of the way.

Same idea at 40: about $388,000. Different number, same principle. You're aiming at one realistic target, not a million-dollar mountain.

(These are long-run averages, not promises. Markets move around. But this is the math that let a nurse like me stop counting shifts.)

On Tuesday we'll plug in your own numbers so you leave knowing yours.

- Ellaine

P.S. Next email is a confession. It involves my 401(k), some luxury bags and a car.

I cashed out my 401(k) for a car (yikes)

PreviewI'm not a finance genius. I'm a nurse who learned the hard way.

Hi {FIRST NAME},

I want you to know who's teaching you on Tuesday.

I've been a nurse for over 15 years. New grad back when we still charted on paper flowsheets, then ICU, then nurse practitioner.

And for a long time, I was living paycheck to paycheck. $20,000 in student loans. $10,000 on credit cards. Nothing invested outside my work plan.

My biggest money mistake? I cashed out my 401(k) to buy luxury bags and a new car. Paid the penalty, paid the tax, and gave up years of growth I'll never get back. Yikes.

Then I had my kids, and something shifted. I didn't want them growing up in a house where nobody talked about money, the way I did. So I taught myself, one book and one lunch break at a time.

Less than three years later, I had my first $100,000 invested, on a nurse's salary, while still paying off that debt. And in my 30s, I hit my Coast FI number.

So if you've made money mistakes, welcome. You're exactly who Tuesday is for.

P.S. Next: the question every nurse asks me first. When am I supposed to find time for this?

Twenty minutes, not twenty years

PreviewYou don't need more time. You need the right order, set once.

Hi {FIRST NAME},

I know what you might be thinking. I work 12s. I have kids. When exactly am I supposed to manage my money?

Here's the good news. Done right, this takes very little of your time.

The work is mostly setup. You find your number once. You put your paycheck in the right order once. You set automatic transfers for the day after payday once. And then it runs, whether you're on shift, asleep after a night, or on vacation.

The nurses who struggle aren't the ones without time. They're the ones who never set it up, so every paycheck turns into a fresh decision they're too tired to make.

On Tuesday I'll show you the exact order, account by account, so you can set it up in one sitting.

What nurses in my Academy say

PreviewIt's not about being a math person. It's about not doing this alone.

Hi {FIRST NAME},

I've taught over 10,000 nurses about money, and the stories that stick with me aren't about huge numbers. They're about relief.

Sarah, an RN, told me the weekly calls kept her from putting it off, and having nurses like her around means she doesn't feel alone in it.

Janine, also an RN, said it started with something as simple as tracking her money, and that she couldn't believe how much mindset was getting in her way. Now she feels confident investing.

Sujeidee, an RN and NP, said she wished she'd started months earlier, because she finally understands the market and how to plan for retirement.

None of them came in as finance people. They came in as busy nurses who were tired of guessing.

That's who Tuesday is for. See you there.

- Ellaine

P.S. Bring a pen on Tuesday. You'll want to write your number down.

More shifts aren't the safety net

PreviewThe thing most nurses do when money feels tight, and why it rarely works.

Hi {FIRST NAME},

When money feels tight, what's the first thing most of us do?

Pick up a shift, maybe two. It feels responsible, like a safety net.

But I watched it for years, in myself and in coworkers. More shifts, more money, more tired, and somehow the gap never closes. Because the problem was never how hard we work.

An extra shift's pay sitting in checking does nothing. The same money, sent through the right accounts in the right order, can grow for decades.

That's the shift I want you to make before Tuesday. Stop asking how many more shifts you have to work. Start asking what your number is, and when you hit it.

- Ellaine

P.S. On Tuesday I'll show you how nurses use their number to drop from three 12s to two.

The account most hospital nurses never open

PreviewIt's probably sitting in your benefits portal right now.

Hi {FIRST NAME},

Here's a little homework before Tuesday. It takes five minutes and it might be worth thousands.

Log into your benefits portal and look for two things.

First, your match. If your hospital matches up to 4% and you're putting in 2%, you're turning down a raise. An RN on $95,000 with a 4% match gets $3,800 a year added for free. Second, a 457(b). A lot of hospitals offer one right next to the 403(b). It's a second bucket you can fill, and depending on your plan, it can be more flexible about when you take the money out. Nobody mentions it at orientation.

Reply and tell me what you found. I read these.

On Tuesday I'll show you where both of these fit in the full paycheck order.

- Ellaine

P.S. This is education, not personal advice. Your plan should fit your situation, and that's exactly what we'll talk about.

Let me guess what you're thinking, {FIRST NAME}

PreviewThe four things nurses tell me before they show up.

Hi {FIRST NAME},

Before Tuesday, let me answer the four things nurses tell me most.

I'm too far behind. If you're in your 40s, you probably earn more than you ever have. Starting later can be a strength if the money goes in the right order. I'm not a numbers person. If you can calculate a drip rate, you can do this math. I'll walk you through it with real examples. I still have debt. Me too, when I started. High-interest debt actually has its own spot in the paycheck order, and I'll show you where. Investing feels like gambling. The way I invest is boring on purpose. Broad, automatic, left alone. Exciting isn't the goal.

See you tomorrow night.

- Ellaine

P.S. If you might be on shift Tuesday, come for whatever part you can. The replay is only up for a few days.

Quick note before tomorrow night

PreviewThree rough numbers to have ready.

Hi {FIRST NAME},

Tomorrow at 6 PM PT we find your number, so here's what to have ready. Rough is fine, and nobody sees them but you:

  1. Your age
  2. Roughly what you spend in a year
  3. Roughly what you have invested now, including your work plan

Here's the link again so you don't have to dig for it: [WEBINAR LINK]

And stay to the end. Everyone who's still there gets The Nurse Raise Scripts free, the word-for-word scripts for asking for a raise, negotiating an RN or NP offer, and trading a shift for pay.

- Ellaine

P.S. Join from a laptop if you can. There's a little math on screen and it's easier to follow.
